Photonic crystals are artificial structures that have a periodic arrangement of dielectric (or metallic) materials. They have unique useful properties such as photonic band gaps and unconventional ultra-strong dispersion. |

This project aims at investigating
the possibilities of reducing the lateral dimensions of optical planar
Silica/Silicon waveguides while keeping the optical losses to acceptable
levels. This could lead to miniaturized photonic circuits with dimensions
that are much smaller than those currently achieved. Waveguides based on
surface plasmons will also be studied. |

Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT) Materials with three-level electronic systems can be made transparent for optical signals through appropriate optical pumping of a second optical field. The resulting transparency is a result of a coherent superposition. A number of applications of EIT such as all-optical gating, pulse compression and pulse train generation can be considered. |

Electro-Absorption
Modulators External electro-absorption modulators (EAM) offer a great potential as components in ultra-high speed long distance optical fiber links. The EAM offers a promising combination of high modulation efficiency and high speed. Furthermore, the process is well suitable for integration with semiconductor lasers. |
